For October 3rd, LGBT History Month spotlights Xavier Bettel, current Prime Minister of Luxembourg. Bettel has been influential in educational reforms that emphasize teaching ethics rather than religion in schools. When he was elected in 2013, Bettel became Luxembourg’s first openly gay leader. In 2014, Bettel led Luxembourg to legalize same-sex marriage, and he married his partner of five years in 2015, becoming only the second gay leader in the world to marry. He is one of only three openly gay leaders worldwide.
