Update, Dec. 3, 6:52 p.m.:
NYMag ran a short article on the lawsuit threat.
Original post:
Michael Farris commented on a link on the Queer at Patrick Henry College Facebook page shortly before 5 p.m. this afternoon:
For those who cannot read the text on the jpeg, it says, “After further consultation, I withdraw my note from yesterday. While we believe in the inappropriate nature of the use of our trademarked name, we believe that litigation is not appropriate.”
While we believe our use of “Patrick Henry College” to be legal and appropriate, we are happy to hear that Farris will not be suing his own students.

I demand that Michael Farris stop using the term ‘Christian’ in relating to the identity of Patrick Henry College. He is giving those who might take it seriously a bad name!

LOL, awesome. We’re gonna sue.
December 3, 2012 at 11:29 pm
“Litigation is not appropriate” because you don’t have a case, Mr. Farris. Even a poor, ignorant layperson like me can see that. What on earth were you thinking?
Congratulations, Queer Patrick Henry College. You are clearly very, very effective in your mission of truthfulness to have elicited such a poorly conceived and emotional reaction from the great and powerful “constitutional lawyer.”

I demand that Michael Farris find some other way to get his message out that does not require the use of my name.
December 4, 2012 at 4:08 pm
Okay, I admit I’m not really Patrick Henry. That gravatar kind of gave me away…

Bravo to you brave souls for speaking out. We stand with you in seeking dialogue and a change in the conversation at our Christian Colleges. Please send me an email or a FB message so we can discuss ways we might help.

Congrats on the blog! And on the recent victory! I remember about a decade ago when Michael Farris testified in Washington on Capitol Hill and admitted that the magical successes of homeschooling were due to smaller class sizes. This contradicted the conservative line, but he was under oath! All the best to you and good luck in the future!

I’m British, live in England and i’m not gay. But I can’t believe the amount of crap you lot have to deal with. Good luck.

I wish both sides would shut up. I’m trying to get a job with my degree, and you’re not helping (“you” referring both to the Administration and to QueerPHC).

Keep up the good work people. I’m an old, white, straight, male teacher from Canada and I support your efforts.

Keep up the good work. BTW–I wonder if Mr. Harris knows anything about the Streisand Effect?
December 7, 2012 at 5:00 am
You guys or gals are fabulous. Streisand Effect indeed.I’m here because I saw Ed Brayton’s post about this silliness.

Why are you at PHU? Hie thee to a decent college where you can have some fun!
December 7, 2012 at 1:41 pm
The author(s) of this blog–both of whose identities I know–are not at PHC. They are former students. Which is why their crusade, while perhaps justified, is a bit maddening for alumnae seeking to obtain employment with their degrees.
December 7, 2012 at 8:58 pm
Correct me if i’m wrong, but hasn’t this blog been up and running for a long time? I’m pretty sure it’s “Dr” Farris’s crusade that is bringing negative attention to the school, not Queer PHC.
December 7, 2012 at 9:06 pm
Journey,
In case it isn’t clear, I think both sides are in the wrong here. To be fair, though, Dr. Farris–whom I really do loathe, and if my identity were disclosed, every other alumnus and alumna would know–has restricted his “crusade” to a single ill-advised Facebook post, which he has since retracted.
December 14, 2012 at 8:58 pm
I’m very sorry, my friend, but this is a single minute front in his crusade. I am a resident of Purcellville and watched him throw his sue threats across the entire local community ever since they showed up. His reputation that tarnishes the school FAR precedes this Facebook post. Notice the reactions here? No one is surprised, this is just business as usual for Farris. This little blog is not damning your degree, the school’s administration is.
December 8, 2012 at 9:47 pm
I don’t think this controversy is the only thing preventing you from getting a job with your degree from PHC.
December 18, 2012 at 8:16 pm
It’s the curse of 1) a tiny college that 2) is primarily known for a variety of bad reasons and 3) has a poor accreditation status. Toss that on top of 4) a poor economy in most areas of the country, and further exacerbate it because 5) the types of degrees available at PHC are not in high demand anyway.
90% of the jobs in the country are “secular”, and 90% of those employers have never heard of PHC. 99% of those few remaining people who have heard of PHC, have never heard of QueerPHC.
I don’t think that QueerPHC, affecting a massive 0.01% of employers, is the source of anyone’s difficulty in finding a job. 🙂

Bravo! My hat’s off to you guys. The only contact I’ve ever had with Michael Farris was back in the long-ago days when I was homeschooling our son and belonged to HSLDA. [I was thoroughly indoctrinated in those days.]
Since then, I’ve seen the light. 🙂
Anyway, I wanted you to know that your courage is not unrecognized. It takes guts to do what you’re doing, and many of us out there in the real world know it.
